VAG-COM FAQ

What is the difference between OBD2 and VCDS?

Unlike generic on-board diagnostics (OBD-II or EOBD), VCDS uses more in-depth Volkswagen Group-specific manufacturer protocol commands. This allows the user to access all diagnostic-capable vehicle systems, even in vehicles not covered by generic OBD-II/EOBD (e.g., pre-1996 models).

What cars use VAG-COM?

Can VCDS do coding?

Yes, VCDS can perform coding. For instance, when coding new Airbag Modules in many VW models, VCDS can suggest an appropriate coding value based on the index number of the airbag controller. This feature is available only with Ross-Tech’s Professional Grade (HEX) interfaces.

Can VCDS run on Windows 10?

Yes, all current versions of VCDS and VCDS-Lite are fully compatible with Windows 10. However, VCDS does not work on Windows 10 running in “S mode,” as “S mode” prevents software installation from any source other than the Microsoft Store.

Will VCDS run on Windows 11?

  • 1 GB of RAM
  • Windows 7 or newer (Windows 7 through 11, excluding RT)

Does VCDS support BMW?

There is a very technical way to configure a VCDS cable to work as a virtual COM port for BMW programs (such as INPA), but it’s not ideal and may cause driver issues. It’s best to use VCDS for VAG products and get a BMW-oriented cable like “K+DCAN” for BMW diagnostics.

Does Audi use VCDS?

Yes, VCDS has been providing diagnostics for VW-Audi Group vehicles since 2000. It was the first truly affordable, full-function diagnostic system for VW/Audi, and its constantly updated software ensures compatibility with all VW, Audi, Seat, and Skoda passenger cars through the current model year.
